What is a Seed Phrase?

A seed phrase (also known as a recovery phrase) is a set of 12 or 24 English words that serves as a human-readable version of your wallet's private key.

For example: apple banana cloud dream eagle forest garden house island jungle king lamp (example, not a real seed phrase)

These 12 words can restore your entire wallet, including all addresses and assets.

Seed Phrase vs Private Key vs Password

ConceptFunctionConsequence of Loss
Seed PhraseRestores the entire walletPermanent loss of assets

Wallet PasswordUnlocks the AppCan be recovered using the seed phrase
🚨 Seed phrase leaked = assets gone. Anyone who gets your seed phrase can immediately transfer all your assets, and they cannot be recovered.

How to Safely Store Your Seed Phrase?

✅ Correct Practices

  • Write it down on paper: Use a pen to write it on paper and store it in a safe place (safe, fireproof and waterproof container)
  • Multiple backups: At least 2-3 copies, stored in different locations
  • Engrave on a metal plate: Fireproof and waterproof, more durable than paper (specialized seed phrase steel plate products)
  • Offline storage: Store encrypted on a device that is never connected to the internet

❌ Incorrect Practices

  • Saving a screenshot to your phone's photo album (cloud sync may leak it)
  • Storing it in WeChat, email, notes, or other online applications
  • Taking a photo and uploading it to any cloud service
  • Telling anyone, including "customer service"
⚠️ No one needs your seed phrase. Anyone who asks for your seed phrase is 100% a scammer, including people claiming to be Binance customer service.

What to Do If You Lose Your Seed Phrase?

If you lose your seed phrase but your wallet app is still accessible, immediately transfer your assets to a new wallet (with a new seed phrase). If the app is also inaccessible, your assets will be permanently lost with no way to recover them.

💡 Advice for beginners: When starting out, keep your coins on exchanges like Binance where you don't need to manage a seed phrase. Consider using a self-custody wallet only after you become more familiar with the process.
