Side-by-side: what is the product?
| Question | Robinhood onchain Stock Tokens | xStocks | Robinhood Classic Stock Tokens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal form | Tokenized debt securities issued by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited | Issuer-backed tokens representing the economic value of a share or ETF | Price-tracking derivative contracts in the European app |
| Underlying shareholder rights | No legal or beneficial rights against the underlying company's issuer | No direct voting right or cash dividend as a shareholder | Not a conventional brokerage share |
| Backing | Robinhood says one corresponding share backs each token | xStocks says underlying shares or ETFs are held 1:1 in custody | Subject to separate derivative terms |
| Outside wallet transfer | Can be used in supported self-custody wallets and onchain apps where eligible | Can move on supported networks and wallets; verify the contract and network | Robinhood's help page says external wallet/platform transfers are unavailable |
A 1:1 reserve describes collateral; it does not itself confer voting rights against Apple, NVIDIA or another underlying company. Claims against the product issuer depend on its terms.
How do dividends and splits reach holders?
Robinhood's onchain product page says cash dividends are not distributed directly: proceeds are reinvested, increasing a token multiplier. xStocks documentation describes a rebasing mechanism that adjusts token balances for dividends and splits. Presentation differs, and tax treatment, corporate actions and ultimate redemption depend on the governing documents.
Does 24/7 trading mean instant redemption at the share price?
No. Robinhood says direct issuer redemption is subject to KYC/AML and product terms. xStocks distinguishes the primary issuance/redemption market, which requires onboarding and generally operates 24/5, from secondary trading that may run 24/7 on supported platforms. Kraken's FAQ says xStocks cannot simply be transferred to a traditional brokerage account. When the underlying market is closed, token prices may depend on thinner liquidity and wider spreads.
Why do Robinhood descriptions conflict?
They may describe different products. Robinhood's European Classic Stock Tokens support article concerns app-based derivatives that cannot be sent to an outside wallet, while its onchain Stock Tokens page concerns wallet-compatible tokenized debt securities. Always check the exact product name and terms.
